Working with a Designer 5 Tips to Get the Most Out of the Working Relationship

So you’ve hired a designer. Yay! That’s awesome! I’m guessing the reason that you hired someone to help you with your brand, look, logo, etc is that you may not be artistically inclined or just don’t have the time to do it yourself. That’s where people like me come in. We’re here to help your company and your brand look like a rockstar. But we need some help too! Here are some ways that you can help make the most of your time and money while you’re working with a designer.

  1. Come with some ideas! I’ve worked with both types of clients; those who have a clear vision of what they are looking for and those who have no idea. When working with the latter, I will ask a lot of questions on colors, styles, overall feel of what the brand should be, goals for the brand, etc. As we dig into the conversation a little bit more, it may help them to share what their vision for the brand is and to help me create something that they fall in love with. Clients that I meet with who have ideas are equally as fun to work with and I like to discuss what they like about the ideas that they’ve brought to me to combine them into a distinct look for them. And then there are the very select group of clients who have complete and total trust in you to create something awesome and tell you “just go for it”. 
     
  2. Communicate. I know that this seems pretty self-explanatory, but you’d be surprised how often a designer will hear “I don’t like this” and no other explanation. As awesome as you think your designer is, they are not mind readers; they need a little bit of help when it comes to making revisions. The more specific the better because you’ll most likely get the revisions quicker (and save some money if you’re being charged by the hour). As a designer I want you to take what I’ve created for you and shout it from the rooftops because it’s knocked your socks off. I need to know if you’re not a fan of a color, a font, etc. You’re not going to hurt my feelings.
     
  3. Listen. Like that cute little kid from the YouTube video, “honey, listen.” There may be a time where an idea that you have might not work with the design. Or it might not look good when the size is reduced. If your designer pushes back a little, it’s because they may have a different idea about executing your vision. Trust them! That’s why you hired them right?
     
  4. Be Respectful of their time. Projects with fast turnarounds happen. I get it. Deadlines can be tight. But don’t be the Boy Who Cried Wolf with every project. Be honest about the timeframe and if the turnaround is tight, be prompt with your edits back. Efficiency and responsiveness are two things that I value when I work with clients. I try and treat each and every project like it’s my only project and the most important thing in the world, just like my client. 
     
  5. Enjoy the Process! You’re working with a designer to bring an idea to life! In my book, that’s pretty darn nifty!
